BMW i8 2017

The BMW i8 is a new two-door sports car of a decidedly different stripe—for any automaker, not just the brand that brought you the "Ultimate Driving Machine."

Image result for bmw 18

BMW's i8 takes a more integrated and subtle approach to a high-performance supercar for the energy-conscious age. Instead of electric motors paired with a heavy gasoline powertrain, the i8 uses the 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine from the Mini lineup and electric motors for a total combined output of 357 horsepower.

The i8's lightweight, carbon-fiber-plastic body lets the all-wheel-drive car take full advantage of the setup for either energy savings or supercar-like performance. It has remained largely unchanged after a short 2014 model year. In 2017, a striking Protonic Red edition with various trim accents is newly available. The year before, BMW got permission to offer its laser headlights, which are breathtakingly effective.

The i8 is the second vehicle to come out of the automaker's "i" sub-brand, following the i3 city car to market. The i8 can be considered the current technology flagship for BMW and with a base price of more than $140,000 is easily the most expensive offering from the Bavarian automaker to start.

Though the two are related in some ways, the i8 coupe appeals to a different audience than the i3—those who want fast performance in a light car without the bulk and fuel consumption of a V-8 or V-10 engine. It's less practical than the i3 of course, and uses the weight savings and other technologies for a combination of performance and efficiency.

First unveiled as the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the i8 sports coupe is fitted with two entirely separate powertrains. Up front, an electric motor draws energy from a battery pack to drive the front wheels; a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine powers the rear wheels.

Image result for bmw i8 key

Two years later, the car had evolved into the BMW i8 Concept, which appeared at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The company has also shown an i8 Concept Spyder, indicating that the i8 may be offered both as a fixed-roof coupe and an open-air convertible—although the droptop version may be a few years out.

For the 2011 car, which was much closer to the production version, the original concept's diesel engine had been replaced by a gasoline engine. That is BMW's new 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine—which is used in the new generation of Mini Coopers and pegged for a new front-wheel-drive BMW model.

For maximum acceleration and output, both power trains can operate in concert, making the i8 an all-wheel-drive coupe that some have called a "super car." In this mode, the i8 becomes what engineers call a "through-the-road" hybrid, meaning that each power train operates a different set of wheels. Though the power trains don't share an axle, the electric motor is tuned to make up the power lost during the gasoline engine's gear changes, ensuring a smooth and continuous flow of power.

The i8 uses a 7.1-kwh lithium-ion battery pack that runs between the two seats; its low placement keeps the center of gravity close to the ground for better handling. The i8 can travel at moderate speeds for as many as 20 miles on its electric charge, with a 129-hp motor driving the front wheels. Once the pace picks up, and in certain modes, the 3-cylinder engine sends 228 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. When the two power sources combine, total output reaches 357 hp, and the i8 is able to accelerate to 60 mph in a claimed 4.4 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 155 mph.
The i8 is a very different take on a two-door sports car, and its looks are easily as groundbreaking as the power concept. The i8 borrows many cues from a recent concept that was itself homage to the M1 supercar. There is also design language and some specific elements shared with the i3 EV that's launching alongside it, but the two are strikingly different. Where the i3 five-door is tall and large inside, with a stubby footprint, the i8 is low, sleek, and sexy, with beautiful flowing details along its flanks that culminate in a cantilevered wave over the rear haunches. The i3, on the other hand, is meant to move people and stuff in comfort throughout urban areas, packing an under floor battery that will allow 80-100 miles of EV driving per charge.
Both cars are built in two parts: an aluminum platform holds the battery, electric motor, and other powertrain components, while a body shell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic sits on top. The combination is light, durable, and cutting-edge, with BMW about to become the world's leading automaker in the use of carbon fiber in mass production. The total weight of the BMW i8 is 3,455 pounds.

To go along with the nonstandard powertrain, BMW offers the i8 in different "Worlds" instead of what would normally be referred to as trim levels. Basically design-and-options packages, the world’s act like curated paths for the buyer to follow. At the top, the Pure Impulse world includes all of the otherwise optional features, with a final MSRP just north of $150,000.

After a brief 2014 model year, the i8 returned for 2015 with one small change: Comfort Access has now been made standard on all models. For 2016, laser headlights were made available on American-market cars.

Toyota 86 2017

Designed as a no-compromise sports car, everything is optimized for a superior driving experience. Control and feel derive from a low center of gravity and the lightweight 4-cylinder 2.0 liter horizontally opposed engine, the unique design of which allows a lower hood height. The 2+2 interior is snug, with sports seats and interior styling that complements the exterior styling’s promise of performance.

Image result for toyota 86

The GT86 comes in three versions, all designed to satisfy your passion for sports car perfection. Get their full details here. Choose the GT86 that is right for you. With three models and a choice of transmissions to choose from, you’re bound to find the ideal GT86 for you.
The Toyota GT86 is the car we've been asking for since British manufacturers stopped making roadsters. And by "we" I mean the kind of people who want – or claim to want – a rear-wheel-drive, front-engine two-seater with sharp handling and a sporty vibe. It’s here, freshened up with a facelift after five years on the market, and it's still one of the best driver's cars you can buy.

Related image

It was never meant to be particularly fast or powerful. With just shy of 200bhp, it's got less oomph than a top-spec family estate and will be comfortably beaten by the latest generation of hot hatches. Instead of outright brawn, the GT86 brings playful driving (that is to say, sliding the back end around and generally being a bit of a hooligan) to well within the speed limit. It sets out to deliver a pure, affordable, rewarding driving experience, and largely succeeds.

Image result for toyota 86

Toyota GT86 2017
The GT86 is erroneously marketed as a four-seater. There’s no possible way that four adults, or even two adults and two children, could comfortably travel in this car, so it’s better to think of it as a two-seater with four seatbelts. The driver and passenger have reasonable legroom and elbow room, but the roof is low and so head space is constrained. Combined with the gloomy black interior and you end up with a slightly cramped-feeling cabin.

There’s stowage space and an adequate glove box, though, as well as a lidded compartment under the central arm rest that contains two cup holders. As with some other ‘keyless go’ cars, there’s nowhere obvious to leave the key fob – it’ll rattle around wherever you stash it.
The low, firm bucket seats offer support under enthusiastic cornering conditions, but give little by way of comfort on longer journeys. The low roofline is a little oppressive for taller drivers and while the door frame is generously padded, you can still expect to make contact with it on a regular basis.

It’s the ride that makes this an uncomfortable ride, though. With suspension optimised for going around bends rather than going over bumps, the GT86 is a tiring car to drive in town, on motorways and in the countryside. The fantastically communicative chassis does an annoyingly good job of conveying the minutiae of the road surface directly into your coccyx.

Image result for toyota 86

Toyota GT86 2017
There’s something exciting about the interior of the GT86, even if it isn’t conventionally attractive in any way. Big orange LCD readouts look like something from a late-80s action film, even though they only tell you the dual-zone air conditioning temperatures for you and your passenger. Chunky switches control all the other functions and the various dials and nobs, while plasticky, have a pleasing enough weight to them. The whole thing has the feel of a well-built toy.

That’s apart from the touchscreen, another relic and this time not in a good way. The sat nav functions are weak, but most frustrating are the slowness with which it operates. Changing the radio station can be a tricky task and the small buttons on the screen make it hard to use on the move, especially considering how much the GT86 bumps around.

Toyota GT86 2017
The GT86 is a very low car, an attribute which puts you at a disadvantage in some driving situations. Rear visibility is meager so the optional parking sensors are essential if you plan on reversing. The A-pillars are quite girthy too, which is a distraction to begin with.

The 2.0-litre engine is a tad old-fashioned and requires constant thrashing to make proper progress. Anyone who’s spent time in a modern turbocharged petrol car might find the GT86 a little sluggish, as its 7.7 0-62mph time is slow compared to its price tag. Get used to block changing, too – finding proper torque requires some guesswork at first.

Toyota Rav4 2017

Adventure awaits you, wherever you go. Modern design and surprising features characterize the RAV4. Welcome to the crossover SUV that offers so much more than you’d expect from a medium SUV.
RAV4’s streamlined design conveys an immediate sense of occasion, backed up by a strong structure that offers safety and excellent driving performance. The luxuriously appointed interior is crammed with features and cleverness that give you space, comfort and practicality.
The 2017 Toyota RAV4 is the latest in a long line of compact crossover SUVs to grace the automaker's showrooms.

Image result for toyota rav4 2017

It's one of the oldest nameplates among small crossovers, but it has largely kept with the times and is offered in a wide array of models, including a hybrid. RAV4s are available in LE, SE, XLE, Limited, and a new Platinum trim for 2017, meaning there's one for just about everyone.

Overall, the RAV4 scores 7.3 out of 10 on our ratings scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

The RAV4 Hybrid was a new model for 2016, a spiritual successor to the Ford Escape Hybrid sold from 2004 to 2012.

Toyota RAV4 styling and performance

Toyota spent most of its effort revising and updating the RAV4's interior last year, which came in response to negative customer feedback. The RAV4 now uses improved materials, including more soft-touch surfaces. It added trim around certain dashboard and console elements, a digital display in the revised instrument cluster, an available 7.0-inch touchscreen, and a 12-volt outlet for the rear plus another USB port.

The RAV4's exterior also got a thorough nip-and-tuck along with new wheel designs. Its tail is chunky, upright, and has unusual taillights that stand proud of the body. Inside, the dashboard is busy; to our eyes, the simplest RAV4 LE is more coherent than the many trims and surfaces of the top-of-the-line RAV4 Platinum.

The RAV4 emerged in the 1990s as part of the first wave of compact crossovers—small SUVs build on car underpinnings—and it's grown up some. It's now technically a mid-size, although Toyota's Highlander seven-seat model is really the company's entry in that segment.

Image result for toyota rav4 2017

The current RAV4 bowed in late 2012 as a 2013 and was re-aligned as a 4-cylinder-only offering with five seats, in contrast to its predecessor that offered a V-6 and a third row.

Two powertrains are offered in the RAV4. The base engine is a 176-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-4 paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. For drivers concerned about sporty driving, the automatic's sport-shift mode makes it more enjoyable. A 0-to-60 mph time of less than 9 seconds is acceptable; while the RAV4 isn't fast, it's quick enough for most family needs. All-wheel drive is a $1,400 option

The RAV4 Hybrid is actually more powerful than the base RAV4, with a combined peak power of 194 hp from a 154-hp 2.5-liter inline-4 paired with the latest generation of Toyota's Prius-derived two-motor Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The RAV4 Hybrid's standard AWD is not mechanical—as in the gasoline model—but instead uses a 50-kw (67-hp) third electric motor on the rear axle to provide the rear wheels with torque when its control system senses power is needed. The RAV4 Hybrid is the quickest model in the lineup—capable of getting to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. And it gets EPA ratings of 32 mpg combined, more than a 30 percent improvement over the 25 mpg delivered by the other RAV4 AWD models.

Image result for toyota rav4 2017

Those figures are for the 2016; we're still waiting for word on any RAV4 Hybrid changes for 2017.

On the road, the RAV4 is responsive, but far from as sporty as a Mazda CX-5, a Subaru Forester XT, or even the base Ford Escape. It rides lower than other compact SUVs, and the AWD version improves on-road handling as well as providing better traction in inclement weather. The well-weighted electric power steering provides a good sense of center. For a slightly better ride, stick with the 17-inch tires on LE and XLE versions.

The RAV4 SE model doesn't change the standard powertrain, though it adds paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and a sport-tuned suspension mated to 18-inch alloy wheels, plus a host of styling items that further differentiate it.

Base versions of the RAV4 have seats that we found less supportive than the firmer bolsters offered in the XLE version, but all models are about as roomy as the equally bigger-than-expected Honda CR-V. But the back bench is less supportive than many adults will prefer, and its flip/fold mechanism is one step shy of the Honda's. Cargo space is cavernous, and most versions get a power tailgate.

The RAV4 buffs up its safety credentials, with a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS. A previously optional suite of safety tech is new this year, and standard on the RAV4 Limited. It includes forward collision warning, followed by automatic pre-collision braking if the driver doesn't take action. It also wraps in lane-departure alert, a radar-based adaptive cruise control, a pedestrian pre-collision system, and automatic high beams. A new surround-view camera system gives drivers a 360-degree view of their surroundings using four cameras, mounted on the front, side mirrors, and rear of the car. Limited models include blind-spot monitors with cross-traffic alerts as well; a rear-vision camera is standard on all models, as are eight airbags.

No other compact crossover can boast that level of standard safety equipment.

There's a roughly $10,000 gap between a RAV4 LE and the range-topping Platinum, and meaning there's a model for just about every shopper. All models include the basics, including a touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, and the expected power windows and locks. XLEs add automatic climate control and a power rear hatch, while Limiteds go a step further with synthetic leather seat trim and a power driver's seat with memory. The new Platinum comes with monochromatic styling, a lift gate operated by a swipe of a foot under the bumper, and a proximity key.

Image result for toyota rav4 2017 interior

Front-wheel-drive LE and XLE models of the RAV4 manage fuel economy numbers of 23 mpg city, 30 highway, 26 combined. Upgrade to a Limited or Platinum and those figures fall to 23/29/25 mpg thanks to their larger wheels. Opting for all-wheel drive lowers everything about one click all around.

Those aren't class-leading numbers, with competitors like the CX-5 and Forester easily besting the RAV4, but the hybrid's numbers bring it more closely in line. That model is rated at 34/31/33 mpg for the 2016.
